One of the quickest and easiest ways to travel around in Barcelona is without any doubt the subway. The subway network of the city belongs to one of the longest of the world, the only cities that have bigger networks are London, Moscow, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Stockholm and Saint-Petersburg. On the 31st of July in 2010 the subway system of Barcelona counted 123 kilometers and 164 stations. Most of the trains consist out of 5 carriages and have air-conditioning.

 

 

The Palau Robert is situated at the Passeig de Gràcia 107, at the corner with the Avinguda Diagonal. This building was constructed between 1898 and 1903 as a private residence for Robert Robert I Surís, the Marquis of Robert, a prominent politician and financer. Nowadays the Palau Robert is property of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Catalan government. The complex consists out of three exhibition halls, a concert hall, an information centre of the Catalonian region, a tourism office of the city of Barcelona, a bookstore and a pleasant park that is accessible for public.

 

No trip to Europe would be complete without a visit to historical sites in Barcelona. A city steeped in culture, Barcelona traces its history back to 230 BC, when it was part of the Catalonia Empire. The city was founded by the Carthaginians, but conquered by the Romans and became part of the Roman Empire. Barcelona was absorbed by various empires throughout the years, and eventually became part of what we now call Spain in the 15th century. As you might expect, this rich history has left Barcelona with numerous sites that are 'must sees' when traveling through Spain. The Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes was founded in the beginning of the 14th century and is situated on a small hill called Sant pere Màrtir on an upper part of Barcelona. It contains numerous amounts of artifacts, religious items and furniture that the nuns collected throughout the years.

 

Recently the Tourism Service of Barcelona presented the results of the past year and the perspectives for 2011 for the touristic sector of the city. It pointed out that, after two difficult years, 2010 was a year of revival with more than 7,13 million visitors and 14 million overnight stays. Joan Gaspart, the chairman of the Tourism Service, also announced that the occupation degree of the hotels in Barcelona didn’t rise and stays on 74,75%, this just because the amount of hotel beds in the city increased.
