The Museu d’Història de la Ciutat de Barcelona (MUHBA) was inaugurated in 1943 and is situated at the Plaça del Rei in the old city centre. The Plaça del Rei is not to be confused with Plaça Reial that’s situated at the Ramblas. The initiator and also first director of this museum was the historian Agustí Duran i Sanpere. The present museum complex in fact consists out of three buildings: the Casa Padellàs, the Capella de Santa Àgata and the Palau Reial Major.

To arrange a city-trip with kids is sometimes difficult, but in Barcelona there fortunately are a lot of attractions focused on the youngest. There are even a few museums that are perfectly capable for a visit with children. Let’s take a look at these two: the CosmoCaixa and the Museu d’Història de Catalunya.

The new Rock museum, the museum where Barcelona has waited for so long, is established in the new shopping centre Las Arenas and opens its doors this week’s Friday, the 1st of April. In the museum you can watch all kinds of rock relics, take for example the first guitar of John Lennon and the wedding dress of Madonna worn at her ‘Like a Virgin’ Tour. The museum has 4 rooms. Room 1 takes you back to the origins with figures like Bill Haley, Johnny Cash and the ‘king’ himself Elvis Presley.

Antoni Tapies, a Catalan artist who was born in 1923 in Barcelona, is nourished with the Catalan culture and art. He had studied law for 3 years but then left law due to his lung disease and during his convalescence in senatorium he started being interested in arts. Then on he had too many exibitions, famous pieces and counted to be one of the most famous representatives of European abstract expressionism.

A favorite spot for many to drink a glass is the summer terrace of the Frederic Marès Museum. It is situated on a unique location in the old centre of Barcelona, in Barri Gòtic, right next to the Cathedral, on Plaça de Sant lu 5-6. The terrace is opened every day from April until September, from 10.00 till 22.00.

Since the 27th of March 2011 the Museum of natural sciences moved from a building in Parc de la Ciutadella to a modern complex of 9000m2 in Fòrum, near the sea. It also suddenly got a new name: Museu Blau, which means Blue Museum. The collection of the museum contains zoological, geological and botanical material that was being collected during the 132 years of existence of the Museum.

The imagination, ideas, creativity and conquering the fear to accomplish new projects, is one of the goals of the new Museu d’Idees i Invents de Barcelona (MiBa, Museum of Ideas and Inventions), that yesterday was opened in Barcelona. The museum is established in the old political building of two parties in the Gothic quarter, just behind the city-hall. It maintains its old structure and style but it will be filled with different modern design elements.

The Museu National d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is housed in the Palau National, a neo-baroque palace. The museum building is located at the bottom of the mountain Montjuïc. The Palau was originally the Spanish Pavilion of the World Exhibition of 1929. After intensive renovation it was reopened in 1997. The museum collected total of more than 260,000 objects of art and thus is certainly the largest and most significant museum in Barcelona.
Through a Catalonian Museum-Act, the Museum MNAC was founded in 1990 by the merger of the Museu d'Art de Catalunya (Romantic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque) and the Museu d'Art Modern (art of the 19th and 20th centuries).
