Cool green stuff: Barcelona’s Botanical Garden

Jardí BotànicThe Jardí Botànic is situated on the hill of Montjuïc, between the Olympic Stadium, the Castle and the Cemetary of Montjuïc. The park counts 14 hectares of ground and was build at an area  with big height differences. It has the form of an amphitheatre and gives a beautiful view over Barcelona.

The first botanical garden of Barcelona dates back to the 16th century. It was near the Plaça Reial. The first park with a scientific goal was the botanical garden of Sant Joan Despí that was build at the end of the 17th century. In 1930 Pius Font i Quer started with the construction of the Historic Botanical Garden in Montjuïc. This park was inaugurated in 1941 but due to constructions of the Olympic Games in 1986 it was affected a lot.

A big part of the collection of that historic garden was took in in the new botanical garden of which the build started in 1991. In 1999 it was being opened for the public. The intention was that it would be a centre for safeguarding the biodiversity of the Mediterranean flora. The garden was realized in a zone that was in a bad shape for years. For many years it was a quarter with sheds named Can Valero and later on became a garbage dumping site.

In this park you’ll find plants from different areas with a Mediterranean climate. In an artificial way the ecosystems of the plants are being imitated. The area is divided in geographical sectors; Australia, Chili, California, South Africa and the Western and the Eastern part of the Mediterranean. A separate part of the park is planted with flora of the Canary Islands. At the moment the botanical garden possesses about 1350 different plants but a project wants to eventually house 4000 different types of Mediterranean types from all over the world.

The park is opened everyday of the week from October until March from 10.00 till 18.00. In April, May and September it closes at 19.00 and in June, July and August at 20.00. The entrance price is €3,50 or €4,00 if you want to visit the natural museum too. In this museum you’ll find temporary exhibitions about nature and here role in art and science.
