The white communication tower of Montjuïc is a realization of the Valencian architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. She was built between 1989 and 1991 in the so called Olympic Ring of Montjuïc as a result of the Olympic Games held in 1992. In these Olympic Ring you can also find the Palau Sant Jordi and the Olympic Stadium.

The steel tower of Calatrava 136 meters heigh and her design is very innovative compared to most of the communication towers. Her structure is based on a vertical pillar but has a silhouette that makes you think of a sportsman carrying the Olympic flame. The upper part of the tower, the transmission zone, looks like an arrow and bow. At the foot of the tower you will find a fountain constructed out of concrete that looks live waves.

The construction promoter of the tower was the telecommunication company Telefónica (now Movistar), in order that it also bears the name Torre Telefónica. Many call it simply Torre de Montjuïc.

Cause of the orientation of the tower it also serves as a sundial,  because of the shade of the big pointer is projecting on the Plaça d’Europa. Since 2006 the Torre de Calatrava is also used as the victory trophy for the Big Price of the Spanish Formula 1 that is being raced in the circuit of Catolonia.

Another well-known communication tower that was built as result of the Olympic Games of 1992 was the Torre de Collserola. This tower was realized by Norman Foster.
