Getting around Barcelona - public transport

The metropolitan transport system in Barcelona is very efficient. In the city there’s a big number of bus lines and a large underground network that covers almost all the city. There is also a modern tram system, and tickets are interchangeable. Prices are reasonable, and there are night buses for those who need to get around after hours.

Underground

Barcelona’s underground network is open all working days and Sundays from 5am to 12am. Fridays and nights before festive days its open until 2am. On Saturdays there’s a non-stop service (24hs).

On December 24th the metro closes at 11pm.

Buses

Buses are usually working between 5.30am to 22pm. From 22pm you can find many night buses (most of them starting their round from Plaza Catalunya area). These buses are called Nitbus (night bus) and prices are different than the day buses.

Bus and underground prices

The price for one ticket (one ride, either bus or train) is of 1,35 Euros. Its always a much better and cheaper option to obtain a card for your stay in Barcelona. There are many kinds of cards (and all of them can be used either in buses or at the metro):

T-10 will be the most economical solution. It cost 7,70 Euros for 10 rides, its not personal (so it can be used by many people at a time) and you can use it during many days.

T-Dia is valid for a whole day and the price is 5,80 Euros, but it can be used only by one person at a time.

T-2 dies is valid for 2 consecutive days in underground, buses or Ferrocarriles. The price is of 10,70 Euros (unlimited number of rides). They can only be used for one persona at a time.

T-3 dies is valid for 3 consecutive days in underground, buses or Ferrocarriles. The price is of 15,20 Euros (unlimited number of rides). They can only be used for one persona at a time.

T-4 dies is valid for 4 consecutive days in underground, buses or Ferrocarriles. The price is of 19,50 Euros (unlimited number of rides). They can only be used for one persona at a time.

T-5 dies is valid for 5 consecutive days in underground, buses or Ferrocarriles. The price is of 23,10 Euros (unlimited number of rides). They can only be used for one persona at a time.

T-Mes is only an option if you will be staying for a long time in Barcelona. With it you can do as many rides as you want during a month time. Of course, this ticket is personal and the prices is 47,90 Euros. You can but this card at anytime and it will be valid for 30 consecutive days from the 1st day that you use it.

You can purchase any of these cards at any metro station and some of them at the tourist information.

Tourist Bus (Bus Turistic)

Its an excellent option for moving around the city and getting to know almost every corner of  Barcelona. There are 2 lines, that are at some point connected, the blue and the red route and both of them last about 2 hours and they run daily all year round, except from the 25th of December and January the 1st.

The bus frequency is of 5 to 25 minutes, depending on the season.

The buses start between 9 and 9.30 from almost all the stops and you can take the last bus at 7 or 8pm depending on the season.

The price is of 21 Eu/day per adult and 13 Eu/day per child (between 4 and 12 years old). 2 days adult will be 27 Euros and 2 days child 17 Euros. Together with the ticket you will get vouchers with important discounts for some restaurants, entrance to attractions and shops.

You can buy the tickets at the buses itself or at any point of Tourism Information.

Aerobus

From and to the airport to Barcelona’s centre (8 stops in the city). From Barcelona to the airport the service starts at 5.30am and it ends at 00.15am. From the airport to Barcelona from 6 to 1am. One way is 4,05 Euros and 2 ways 7 Euros.

Teleferic de Montjuic

It runs daily from 10am to 6pm from November to march, from 10am to 7pm in April, May and October and from 10am to 9pm from June to September. The starting point of this Teleferic (cablecar) is at the Paral.lel underground station and it will take you directly to the top of the Montjuic mountain (where you can enjoy from a beautiful view of the city). Prices for adults are of 6 Euros, one way, or 8,30 Euros for two ways. Children between 4 and 12 pay 4,30 (one way) and 6,30 Euros (for 2 ways).
