Eating Out

In the heart of the Gracia neighborhood, in Barcelona, there is a restaurant called Verdi82 that opened for the first time in 2007 as a family adventure.

This restaurant reflects the image of its neighborhood with its culture, its hype population with its artisans, artists musicians, etc., and unique architecture with the balconies where people hang their clothes for them to dry in the hot summer wind.

Pla

"Pla" is a well known Catalan surname so it is not surprising that Sr Pla used it as the name for his restaurant. The word also happens to mean "plain" which Sr. Pla has used as the basis of his eatery. However it is not the first word that pops into mind when you see the decor of the place. Elaborate chandeliers and grand arches and an ornate and spacious dining area. The food couldn't be described as "plain" either; he serves exotic, mediterranean style dishes with a Catalan base and he gets it just right.

Cenario is in Eixample located at the top of calle Enrique Granados. Cenario's is a restaurant-bar whose owners have attneded to every detail making it absolutely perfect, this is reflected in the decor, service and wine list. It is very personal: the owners painted all the pictures that hang on the walls, some of which are very tasteful black and white prints, others which are more colourful, the unostentatious nature of the interior is what makes the bar so nice and cosy.

At Comerç 24 you will find delicious 24, exploring the idea of "luxury tapas" very like Santa Maria. Dishes average around 10 euros each, so it works out at about 40 euros a head, when you've eaten and drunk. Make sure you book, and beware that the dishes are not enormous, so if you are starving you might leave still hungry!

A legend in Barcelona is without any doubt the café and beanery Els Quatre Gats. It was inaugurated on the 12th of June 1897, and was inspired by restaurant Le Chat Noir in Paris. From scratch it already was a unusual and exceptional place, something in between a tavern, traditional pension and a sophisticated modernistic café.

Cerveceria Catalana is in the heart of Eixample and is an absolutely brilliant place to go in a group or just a deux for tapas. Although it isn't dark and smoky with an old man serving tapas and only 3 tables in the whole place it doesn't take any authenticity away from the food, and testament to this is the non stop queues. Don't be deterred though, quite often you only need to fight your way to get you name down and you will be seated straight away. If not you can always go for a quick drink and come back when they have room for you.

There are two 'Rosas' in Barcelona, one Rosa Raval just off the Ramblas near the Macba and another Rosa Negra on via Laietana. They are both Mexican restaurants which serve great food and drink. They are accessible and fun, with bright interiors and a really relaxed atmoshpere. A meal is around 20 euros a head once you factor in a starter main and a few powerful cocktails.

Els Pescadors is one of the best fish restaurants in Barcelona. Aptly located very near the sea in Plaza Prim which is a lovely little square with lots of trees. There are few dishes without fish in them, but if you are a fish lover you will be in heaven. The menu costs about 35 euros a head.
