On top of the hill Montjuïc, at 173 meters above sea level, you’ll find a castle worth visiting. Originally it was a fortress, built in 1640 during the Catalan rebellion against the presence of the Castilian troops in Catalonia. It had to serve as a protection for Barcelona against the army of King Felipe IV. This simple construction was said to be built in barely 30 days.

The TNC, what stands for Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, is one of the most important cultural institutions of Catalonia. This theatre was officially inaugurated on the 11th of September 1997, with the objective to offer as well national as international theatre performances of high quality. A few months earlier, in November 1996, one of the three halls was already being used.

One of the churches in Barcelona that’s definitely worth visiting is the basilica of La Mercè. The main façade of this Basílica de la Mare de Déu de la Mercè, briefly called Basílica de la Mercè, stretches out to a square that has the same name. This square was constructed in 1981.

The national dance of Catalonia is the Sardana, coming from the region l’Empordà in the North of Catalonia. The dancers are holding each other’s hands stretching their arms in the air, they form circles that become bigger and bigger when more people join.

This beautiful park is inspired by the Jardin de Luxembourg in Paris and was constructed on the parcel of the formerly citadel of Barcelona. It is situated in the Ciutat Vella district, near the train station Estació de França, the Arc the Triomf and Vila Olímpica.

Fun to visit when you’re in Barcelona is the La Ribera area in the Ciutat Vella district that is located in the historical centre of the city. Between the 13th and 15th century this zone was the economic centre of Barcelona. In this neighborhood there were built a lot of manors of which you can still admire many in the Carrer de Montcada.

Teatre Tívoli is a large theatre where during the years numerous operas, concerts and Catalan plays took place.  Today you still can come and see nice plays and movies there.

Near the Rambla, in Ciutat Vella, you can find the Plaça Reial (the Royal Square). In the middle there’s a fountain, named ‘Tres Gràcies’ (‘Three Graces’). You will also find two lanterns designed by Antoni Gaudí in his beginning period. Similar looking buildings with colonnades and palm trees are surrounding the square. The Plaça Reial was being completely renovated in 1982.
