Parc de l’Espanya Industrial

Parc de l'Espanya IndustrialAt the South side of train station Sanst is Parc de l’Espanya Industrial situated, or the Parc of the Industrial Spain. The 4,6 hectare big park was constructed on the site of l’Espanya Industrial, a former textile fabric that was founded by the family Muntades in 1847.

In 1969 the fabric was liquidated and the grounds were sold. However it lasted until 1985 before it was set up again. The assembling of the park was part of the plan of the city council of Barcelona to create more open spaces. It was designed by the Basque architect Luis Peña Ganchegui. In the park you’ll find among others a big square, an artificial lake, fountains, play zones, sport infrastructure and several sculptures.

The Parc de l’Espanya Industrial tides over the height difference between the higher situated train station and the lower situated park zone by means of a series of steep stairs. These stairs are at the border of the lake and function as an amphitheatre from where people can watch over the lake. At the top of the stairs are a few futuristic looking towers.

The park has several sculptures, part modern and part replicas of old sculptures like Neptune, which’s situated in the middle of the lake. This piece of art was made by Manuel Fluxà. At one of the sides of the lake a modern Venus is sitting on a rock. This is a sculpture made by José Pérez that he sculpted for the World Fair of Barcelona in 1929.

The most eye-catching piece of art however is ‘El Drac’ realized by Andrés Nagel. This sculpture is impersonating a dragon coming out of a lake. This 150 ton weighing sculpture also serves as a waterslide for children.

On occasion of the Olympic Games of 1992, a sport complex was built where weightlifting was organized. This complex nowadays is intensively being used as a sport and fitness centre.

The park is daily accessible free of charge from 10.00 till evening falls. It is situated at Carrer de Muntades 37 and has entrances in Carrer de Muntades and in Passeig de Sant Antoni.
