Montjuïc

MontjuïcMontjuïc is one Barcelona's most famous mountain sites. There are plenty of attractions on the mountain and around the mountain area.  The mountain, which is actually a 213 meter high hill, serves as historical site for Barcelona near the city center.

Starting at the bottom of the Mountain is the Magic Fountain and Palau National rest at the bottom of the mountain. Palau National and the Magic Fountain were both built for the 1929 National Exhibition. Palau National now serves as the National Art Museum of Catalunya. The museum features ancient art as well as modern exhibits. The Magic Fountain is placed directly in front of Palau National, making a beautiful view. During the night hours, the fountain and Palau illuminate, often times there are fountain light shows in the Magic Fountains.

Another great attraction on Montjuïc is the 'Poble Espanyol' or the Spanish Village, also built for the exhibition in 1929. This village has an assortment of houses mimicking the architecture throughout Spain. Also there are shops representing each town, offering a variety of authentic items like swords, paper, books and jewelry.

A big part of Montjuïc is the Olympic Park and all the attractions from the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona. The different attractions include: the stadium, the Olympic Tower, the diving pool, the Olympic museum and other Olympic facilities.

Montjuïc also offer beautiful gardens that were restored for the Olympics. There are nearly 2,000 different plants and hundreds of specialty cactuses. Monjuïc offers views of Barcelona that create lasting memories and show how beautiful the city is as a whole. A trip around the mountain makes for a great day in Barcelona with a little bit of history, culture, and beauty.

Nice introduction to one of Barcelona's most unique areas! An extra tip: during summer there are open air movie screenings by the fortress. Amazing setting and usually a cool program!
