Right next to the Casa Batlló, on the Passeig de Gràcia, is the beautiful Casa Amatller situated. This house is yet another pearl of the modernistic architecture in Barcelona. It isn’t a realization from Antoni Gaudí but from one of the other well-know architects of the Catalan modernism, Josep Puig i Cadalfach. He designed lots of buildings in Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia among which the old textile factory where at the moment Caixaforum is situated.

In the year 1898 the industrial chocolatier Antoni Amatller i Costa wanted to renovate a building from 1875. He gave this project to Puig i Cadalfach. He made a manor of it in gothic style, with a flat façade and a central patio. A stair in the patio had to grant access to the different residences of the building.

Puig i Cadalfach used his own version of the gothic style, at which he mixed influences of the Catalan gothic with characteristics of the Dutch manors. The most conspicuous element of the building is the stepped façade that makes you think of a chocolate bar. The different sculptural works were mainly realized by Eusebi Arnau, although Alfons Juyol also took a few for its account.

Since 1960 there are offices of the Institut Amatller d’Art Hispànic established in the building, a foundation that was brought to life by descendants of Antoni Amatller. On the ground floor you will find a chocolate store.

You can visit the Casa Amatller from Monday until Friday from 10.00 till 20.00 and on Sundays form 10.00 till 15.00.
