A legend in Barcelona is without any doubt the café and beanery Els Quatre Gats. It was inaugurated on the 12th of June 1897, and was inspired by restaurant Le Chat Noir in Paris. From scratch it already was a unusual and exceptional place, something in between a tavern, traditional pension and a sophisticated modernistic café.

In Els Quatre Gats, among others, Pablo Picasso and Santiago Rusiñol placed their first paintings. Picasso even designed the menu! Also Antoni Gaudí visited regularly. Nowadays it one of Barcelona’s restaurants which attracts lots of tourists, and where you can enjoy a delicious traditional Catalan meal.

Prices depend on the moment of the day you will come to eat: diner is slightly more expensive then lunch. During the day you can choose for a menu, for example: a pasta salad, stewed red beans or a piece of salmon.

However, the most unique about Els Quatre Gats is the interior. Moreover it is an important example of the Catalan Modernism, given that it’s situated in Casa Martí, a building that was designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
