The national dance of Catalonia is the Sardana, coming from the region l’Empordà in the North of Catalonia. The dancers are holding each other’s hands stretching their arms in the air, they form circles that become bigger and bigger when more people join.

According to tradition you can join the group at any moment, but you may not get in between a couple, that is to say between a man with a woman at his right side. When a circle is becoming too big, it is being split up in smaller groups. The dance is more complicated than it looks like and consists out of a pattern of dance steps and changing rhythms. The accompanying music is being performed by a ‘cobla’, an orchestra consisting of a flute player, a drummer, five woodwinds and five brass players.

In August the Serdana is mainly being danced on many local festivals. From September you can join this traditional Catalan dance in Barcelona at Plaça de la Catedral. On Saturdays at 18.00 (from 4 September until 20 November) and on Sundays at 12.00 (from 5 September until 26 December).
