Touristic Attractions

Barri Gotic is the name of the oldest part of Barcelona. Here the Romans established their settlement Barci. There’s not much to find back in this area from the period of the Romans, except for the Historic Museum (Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat) near Plaça del Rei, that is build on Roman ruins. The remains of these ruins can be examined in the basement of the museum. A few of the things you can see there are laundry works from the Roman era, a winery and some residences. Pottery and jewels that were discovered by diggings are also being showed.

The Rambla is thé boulevard in Barcelona, it stretches out from the harbor to Plaça de Catalunya straight through the old city centre. It is a beautiful boulevard where a lot of trees have been placed which give a nice shelter from the sun in the hot summer months. It is not a place to shop but more to grap a drink and watch the street artists. Situated at the Ramblas you can find the La Boqueria market, a place where you can find lots of vegetables, fruits, fish and meat. You can also grap a little snack here, of course is the seafood a recommendation.

The Sagrada Familia is arguably the most famous tourist attraction in Barcelona. Gaudi's largest and most obscure work, this church rises high above all the surrounding buildings and is yet to be completed. Antonio Gaudi was revolutionary in the modernist movement that swept across Barcelona in the late 19th Century and his Sagrada Familia is a prime example of that. Although unfinished the privately funded, Roman Catholic church has been planned to operate some ceremonies in September 2010.

Near the harbor you can find one of the most fun attractions for young and old: the aquarium. Thousands of big and small fishes (including sharks) are swimming around in water basins. There are three different water tanks. In the first, “Ocenarium”, you can see ocean life, it contains 4 million liters of water. The two other tanks are dedicated to tropical ocean life and the Mediterranean sea. The aquarium has specially build tunnels where it feels like you are being part of the underwater life.

Poble Espanyol is a small Spanish village where you can find different samples of Spanish architecture. It was build for International Exhibition which was held in Barcelona in 1929 on Montjuic mountain. There are 116 buildings which were build by two architects. Some of the buildings are exact replicas of existing buildings and others just represent the architectural style of different areas in Spain. One of the most famous replicas is the main entrance gate “Puerta San Vicente”, which original version is located in the Avila city.

Font Magica is a huge fountain, which was built at the bottom of the Montjuic hill to make the World Exhibition in 1929 even more attractive. The main designer was Carles Buigas. Unfortunately, after years of use the fountain and the grounds around became more and more neglected. In 1992 on the occasion of the upcoming Olympic Games fountain was restored to the original splendor.
Nowadays the fountain is one of the most impressive touristic attractions of Barcelona. Lots of people go to Montjuic to see the marvelous spectacle from water, light and classical music. Watching this gives a feeling of seeing pure magic, like in a Disney movies.
