Barri Gotic

Barri GoticBarri Gotic is the name of the oldest part of Barcelona. Here the Romans established their settlement Barci. There’s not much to find back in this area from the period of the Romans, except for the Historic Museum (Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat) near Plaça del Rei, that is build on Roman ruins. The remains of these ruins can be examined in the basement of the museum. A few of the things you can see there are laundry works from the Roman era, a winery and some residences. Pottery and jewels that were discovered by diggings are also being showed.

Above the ground Barri Gotic is also very beautiful. The name makes you think that there are just only gothic buildings. That’s not completely true, but there are many. The one that stands out the most is the big gothic cathedral of Santa Eulalia, or La Seu, that was build between the 13th and the 15th century. The church was named after a girl that was ashamed by the Romans by showing here naked on the plaza. It took place in the summer time, but miraculously there felt snow on the girl to cover up here naked body. According to the legend she was killed after this by the angry Romans.

At the Ramon Berenguer plaza, named after the landgrave of Barcelona (1082-1131), you can still see a part of the old Roman town-wall. The plaza is being surrounded by charming gothic buildings.

The Palau de la Musica, the concert building,  is situated at the border of the old centre near Plaça Catalunya. From the outside it may not look very special, but the interior is overwhelming. Beautiful wood engraving, sculpturing and mosaics. All to do with nature, flowers and leaves. It is build in the beginning of the 20th century but is already being part of the UNESCO worldheritagelist as a fantastic example of modern art.
