The Barcelona Zoo is located in Parc de la Ciutadella, near the old city centre and the beach. It is an extraordinary zoo where the animals live in large cages. Untill 2003, the white gorilla named ‘Floquet de Neu’(snowflake), was the main attraction of the zoo. The animal died suffering skincancerm but still has its own website on the internet. This site is not only meant to keep the memories of Snowflake alive but also to spread knowledge about threatened gorillas.

Also without Snowflake the zoo is worth visiting. You will not only find animals like: hippos, lions, tigers and monkeys, but also animals that only live in Spain. Examples of these animals are the Iberian Capricorn and the Iberian wolf. Real fun is the dolphinarium. You can watch the dolphins behind glass, often they will come to the window to watch who’s looking at them.

Like many zoos, the Barcelona Zoo is also taking care for the threatened species. In a special centre there are bred native water birds to set them free in a later stadium in the Doñana, a protected national reserve in Catalonia.

Furthermore the parc has electrical cars, places to picnic and a mini train. In the parc around the zoo there is a big pond where you can rent a rowing-boat.
