St Patrick's Day

St. Partick’s Day (Irish-Galic: Lá Fhéile Pádraig) is the national holiday of Ireland, North-Ireland, Montserrat and the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador. The holiday is on the 17th of March on which people commemorate the saint, Sint-Partricius. All over Ireland it is celebrated with effusive concerts, fairs, parades and fireworks at the river Liffey in Dublin. Green is the color that is being associated with the festival. The celebrating people mostly wear green clothing and they can buy green beer on this day for example.

St. Patrick’s Day, is being celebrated worldwide, especially the countries where a lot of Irish emigrated to, like the US and Australia. In these countries there are being organized a lot of big parades. In New York the biggest and oldest parade takes place. But also in Dublin and other Irish cities there are being held these parades.

In many countries the group that celebrates this day is growing; not only Irishmen or people with Irish ancestors. There is also a big group without Irish roots that call themselves ‘Irish for the day’.

St. Patrick’s Day is not only linked to the Irish culture, but it’s also a Christian celebration that is celebrated by the Catholic, Irish and Angelical church. This holiday is almost always during Lent and can sometimes take place during the so called ‘Good Week’. If St. Patrick’s Day is in such a week, then the holiday is being postponed to the seconds Monday after Easter.

Of course the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day is also taking place in the city of Barcelona. In a lot of bars and pubs parties are being held. So if you’re in the neighborhood, come and celebrate with us!
