The climate in Barcelona

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate but is also characterized by an urban micro climate, which among others means that the temperatures in the city centre are higher than in the less built areas at the border of the city.

The winters in Barcelona are short, chilly and quite moist but normally the temperatures in the city centre aren’t below zero. In the months January and February the average temperature is around 10°C and the average maximum temperature above 13°C. In the nearby villages and the hill of Tibidabo night frost isn’t an exception.

It almost never snows in Barcelona, however it does snow more there than in other cities around the Mediterranean. The most spectacular snowfall was the one of 1962 with 60 centimetre in the centre and 1 meter on Tibidabo. It also snowed in the 80s, in 1993, and in 1999. The most recent snowfall is the one of March 8th in 2010. In a short period of time there felt 5 to 6 centimetre in the centre and on the beaches, around 10 to 15 centimetre in the higher situated quarters and around 30 centimetre on the hill of Tibidabo.

The summers are relatively dry, long and warm but in July and August the maximum temperatures normally aren’t reaching above the 30°C, given that a wind form over the sea blows up-country. The highest temperature ever measured in Barcelona was 39,3°C in the El Raval quarter on August 27th 2010.

As far as goes the precipitation we see an average of around 600 litres a year. Most of the rain falls in autumn and secondly in the spring. The wettest months are September and October.

In the schedule underneath you can see the average temperatures, precipitation, amount of days with precipitation and hours of sun for the different months of the year. For readability most numbers are rounded to one digit behind the comma.
