The TNC, what stands for Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, is one of the most important cultural institutions of Catalonia. This theatre was officially inaugurated on the 11th of September 1997, with the objective to offer as well national as international theatre performances of high quality. A few months earlier, in November 1996, one of the three halls was already being used.

The complex has three halls, the Sala Gran (870 seats), the Sala Petita (450 seats) and the Sala Tallers (400 seats). It was designed by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill and is one of the most emblematic buildings of the city of Barcelona.

In fact the complex exists out of two different structures. The main building has a surface of 20.000m², has the form of a Greek temple and contains the Sala Gran, the Sala Petita, the vestibule, the artist zone and the offices. The second building has a surface if 5.000m² and looks traditional and modern at the same time. It accommodates a polyvalent hall, the Sala Tallers.

Nowadays the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya offers a wide range of classic and present-day theatre, performances for children and opera, circus, doll and dance performances.
